New Years Trip 2001
Jellico, TN

Since I didn't get to test out my latest mods at Attica because of a broken u-joint, I decided to joint the folks at BAR Offroad on their 2nd annual New Years Run From Your Relatives BASH at Jellico, TN. It was a fun 5 hour drive down in the blowing snow with wipers that did nothing but smear. Time for some new wiper blades. Plenty of cars could be found that had spun off the road, so we took it slow.

On Saturday we took a relatively mild trail. The trail was covered in snow making it more interesting, but even the stock vehicles could make most of the trail without help. It was a lot of up and down snow covered hills with some very scenic overlooks and a couple caves. Ice covered rocks made a couple obstacles interesting.

On Sunday we took the Worser trail. It just keeps getting worser and worser. It was a tough trail to begin with, but this day it had 3" of snow and ice on it. We were .4 miles into the trail when we got to the first major obstacle (now called Breakage point). I tried taking the hard line and ended up breaking an axle u-joint (for the 2nd trip in a row). This time I came prepared with the tools to pull the axles, and Jerry Blair and Chad Adams of BAR Offroad were kind enough to offer on-site service and replace the u-joint for me. At least it was a good chance to test out my new Warn XD9000i. Right after I got going again Jerry tried the same line and bounced his rear drive shaft off of a rock, breaking the yoke. Jerry had a drive shaft with him, so it was a quick repair. The rest of the day was uneventful, just alot of challenging snow covered hills and rocks. Our breakage slowed us down so much that we finished the trail in the dark.
